Sanctuary for Disabled Animals

In 2000, Alayne Marker and her husband Steve Smith quit their management positions at Boeing in Seattle, WA and followed their hearts to Ovando, Montana to make real a dream they had to start and operate a nonprofit sanctuary for disabled animals - primarily horses, dogs and cats.

It is long days and hard work from dawn to dusk. In reflecting on their decision, Steve said, “Alayne and I had a number of rescue animals in Seattle and we knew a place was needed that was dedicated to the care of animals that were blind, deaf, neurologically disabled, etc. We also knew that staying in Seattle and collecting nice salaries, waiting for retirement to do what we really wanted to do, would have driven us to the point of madness.”

Steve and Alayne run the Rolling Dog Ranch Animal Sanctuary largely on their own, with help from a small part-time staff and donor support.
